A Phenomenological Study on Parental Involvement

Problem of the Study

There is close relationship between parental involvement in children education and their academic success (Jeynes& Jeynes, 2011). Children with involvement of their parents are observed having high scores in tests and state exams (Brilliant, 2000). Similarly, it has been observed that children with achieving academic success are able to gain it with the help of their parents. In this regard, it is also found that parents who are involved in the education process of their children are with the set standards for their children’s educational activities as compare to parents of low scoring or failure children (Koki& Lee, 1998). Moreover, parents who are involved in their children education process are those who are aware of its effects on the success of their children education. In this way, the role of schools has also been found in improving parental involvement in the children education process to gain high grades, as children spend most of their time in schools and schools can play important role in building collaborative programs for parents (Che, 2010). Similarly, the educational system is also required to be built on the standard that involves the parents throughout the education process of students. It has been determined that parents due to lack of awareness about the importance of their involvement in their children education do not intend to participate in the education process, therefore, the education system should be established to create awareness in parents regarding their role in passing the state exams by their children. Considering the significant impact of parental involvement in the children academic succeeds, this research aims to identify the role of parent involvement in education of their children and evaluates the policies and planning determined by the government in respect of collaborating parents with children. Limitation of the Research

The study has found certain limitation of this research based on the qualitative methodology for conducting this study. Since, this study is intended to hold interview with parents to identify the experiences of parents in terms of their involvement in the education process of their children and the level of success factor. Therefore, qualitative results and findings of the research cannot be generalized on the large population (Sherman& Webb, 1988). However, sample for this study has been selected using appropriate technique, so that every participant has equal opportunity to be selected as part of the research. Yet, limited sampling will not allow the researcher to generalize the findings of the study on the entire population. It is found that implementation of qualitative methodology for the assessment of parental involvement in the education process of children possesses limited generalizability, despite how systematic process of selection and sampling is chosen (Munhall& Chenail, 2008). Furthermore, this research is phenomenological study is based on the assumption that parental involvement in the education process of their children, and use of materials by them can be used to collaborate with their children to pass the Mandate state exam. The use of phenomenological methodology can impose the threat of biasness because to conduct this study, relevant participants will have to be selected as part of the study (Ary et al., 2009).

Delimitation of the Research

This research study aims to identify the role of parental involvement in the education process of their children, in the context of passing the Mandated state exam. In this way, the scope of this study is limited to evaluate and analyze those factors that encourage the parental involvements in the education process of their children and the ways parental involvement in the education process of their children affect producing positive result. Moreover, parents involved in the education process of their children are analyzed for the material used by them to collaborate with their children and the effects it has on the collaboration of parents with their children to pass the Mandated state exams. The past and present evaluation of the material used by the parents for their involvement in the education process will help in underlining the effects of such material on the parental involvement in education process of their children. This research is mainly focused on the past and present context of parental involvement by comparing the success factors of material used for the collaboration in past and parents by parents to collaborate with their children education process. Thus, this research study includes those parents whose children usually have problem in passing the Mandated state exam and exclude those parents who do not have children to be appeared in the Mandated state exam. Additionally, study revolves around the enablers of parental involvement and the material used for the collaboration in the education process of their children for passing the Mandated state exam and exclude the issues raised in the result of the parental involvement in the social adjustment of the children.

Problem Background

The significance of parental involvement has been determined as substantial factor in motivating and encouraging children in passing the exams by showing positive attitude not only in classroom activity but also in non-curricular activity.  However, parental involvement and collaboration have significant influence on the progress of children success in schools. The involvement of parents in the education of the children can play positive role through encouragement and motivation received from parents. The involvement of parents, however, contradicts as how parental involvement can be effective to create a difference for the children’s education. Different previous studies such as Munhall& Chenail (2008), Jeynes and Jeynes (2011) and Brilliant (2000) have focused on the involvement of parents in educational activities of children, in which school provides help to those parents with parenting, communicating, volunteering, decision-making and community collaboration. In the context of parental involvement in the education process of children, it is found that the way parents participate in the education process determines the effectiveness of their involvement. The role of home learning has been recognized in passing of children in the exam, which emphasizes parents to be aware of the tools and materials to be used for the enhanced learning of children at home. At the first stage, parents are expected to have advanced communication skills to interact with their children, while at second stage, they should be aware of use of effective tools and strategies so that they could monitor the study of their children at home.
